Announcing the "Wedgefield Boat Club"
The beautiful creeks, rivers, and bays of the Low Country play strong roles in its history. Many of these hidden gems surround Wedgefield Plantation and are among its most wonderful assets. To help more people enjoy them, a group of residents is interested in forming a "Wedgefield Boat Club" as a new common-interest group inside the Plantation.
Here's the basic concept:
Membership would open to anyone living in or owning property in Wedgefield Plantation who has an interest in boating or boating-related activities
1. You do not need to own a boat to participate or become a member
2. Dues would be kept low, say $20 per year, waived for the first year, to cover mailings and occasional light refreshments
3. The Club's main purpose would be to provide an opportunity for anyone who is interested to go boating, and to meet others in the community with similar interests
4. Activities could include fishing, cruising, hunting, water-skiing, nature-watching and photography, swimming, exploring beaches, or anything that can best be done only by boat
5. The Club would sponsor boating-oriented social events such as youth and adult fishing tournaments, flotilla cruises to shelling beaches, lunch or dinner by boat in town, etc.
6. The Club would also encourage safe boating by arranging courtesy safety inspections and sponsoring boating classes for both children and adults
We envision it being somewhat like the Women of Wedgefield: primarily a social and community involvement group, but boating-based and co-ed. The club would not be sponsored by or seek funds from WPA, but may request to use the Office for community-service events such as safe boating classes.
As a kick-off event, we are organizing a “boat parade” at noon on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, followed by a potluck cookout at a resident’s home. If you are interested in participating, either with your boat, or as a passenger on a neighbor’s boat, please RSVP to the organizers at the e-mail address below by May 24 so we can plan appropriately.
If you cannot attend the Memorial Day events, but are interested in joining, or you have ideas for getting this concept off the ground, please send us an e-mail, or drop a note off at the WPA Office. We look forward to sharing an active boating season with neighbors and new friends.
